In the late 1980s, British art entered what was quickly recognized as a new and very typical phase, what era became known as YBAS – British young artists. British young art can be seen having a comfortable starting point in the exhibition frozen held in 1988 by Damien Hirsst (the most famous, or famous, from YBA) when he was a student at the Goldsmiths College of Art. Freeze is the work of fellow Goldsmiths students, many of them are also leading artists related to YBA, such as Sarah Lucas, Angus Fairhurst and Michael Landy.

Goldsmiths College of Art plays an important role in the development of movements. For several years have fostered a new form of creativity through its courses that eliminate traditional media separation into paintings, sculptures, graphic arts etc. Michael Craig-Martin is one of the most influential teachers.

YBA brand

The first use of the term ‘British young artist’ to describe the work of Hirst and other young artists by Michael Corris in Artforum, May 1992. Akronim ‘YBA’ was then created in 1996 in the Monthly Art magazine. The label turned out to be a strong brand that was recognized throughout the world and marketing tools that were useful for artists related to it (as well as for British art in general in the 1990s). One of the features that defines YBA is the entrepreneurial approach ‘can do them’ to show and market their work. This can be seen in ambitious exhibitions such as freeze organized by hiret and his contemporary, as well as in ventures such as the pharmacy restaurant openly in notting hill in 1998 and backed by hiret, and the shop set up in an empty shop in East London By artists Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas to market their work.

What is the art like?

Although certain extensive trends both formal and thematic can be seen in the art of YBA, (such as the use of objects and images found that are sometimes considered surprising); There is no style or the YBA approach. The era is characterized by complete openness to the materials and processes that can be made art, and forms that can be taken.

Prominent YBA artists have raised dead animals (Damien Hirest); objects found with steamroller (Cornelia Parker); Appropriate objects from medical history (Christine borland); serving his own bed as an art (Tracey Emin); Make a statue of fresh food, cigarettes, or women’s tight pants (Sarah Lucas). YBA artists have used films, videos and film photography; Using graphic images and arts used in all possible ways (eg Michael Landy); Increasingly developing the concept of installation (multi-part work that occupies a single space), and at least, refreshing and revitalizing the art of painting (Gary Hume).

Moreover, as we have seen above, this term is one of a collection of dictionaries, acronyms, terms, jargon, or terminology in the field of arts that begins with an alphabet or prefix Y, as well as terms associated with Y.
