Understanding War Artists
So, what is actually meant by War Artists?
War artists are artists assigned through an official scheme to record war events.
Explanation of War Artists
In Britain, the scheme sponsored by the government was established for artists to record the first and second world war. The imperial war museum continues to assign artists to record war events in newer conflicts. In addition to providing interesting documentation about the activities and events of war time, many works produced by war artists are also interesting and important as art.
First World War
During the first world war, two main streams of activities produced official war art. The imperial war museum, which was founded by the Act of Parliament in 1917, was given the task of gathering all types of material that documented war, including art. Meanwhile, the government also assigned and bought art to make notes and warnings for war through paintings assigned from the best and, sometimes, the most avant-garde British artists at that time. These include Wyndham Lewis, Paul Nash, Chistopher Richard Nevinson, John Singer Sarger, Sir Stanley Spencer and Sir William Orpen. At the end of the war, these collections were combined in the imperial war museum.
Second World War
During the Second World War, a more structured approach to official images was taken when the war of war advisory committee, chaired by Sir Kenneth Clark, was founded. As in the previous war, the pictures collected were exhibited in London and in national and international tour performances. In 1946, after the war ended, one third of the collection was allocated to the imperial war museum and the rest was distributed to museums and galleries throughout Britain and the Commonwealth. More than 300 artists have been assigned by the Army Advisory Committee, including John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore, Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer in front of the house; and Anthony Gross, Edward Bawden and Edward Ardizzone abroad.
Conflict later
The imperial war museum continues to assign war artists to record war where Britain is involved. The artists assigned to have included Linda Kitson (Falklands War), Peter Howson (Bosnian Civil War), and Langlands & Bell (Afghanistan conflict).
