Understanding Vorticism
So, what is actually meant by Vorticism?
Vorticists are the British Avant-Garde group formed in London in 1914 with the aim of creating art that expresses the dynamism of the modern world.
Explanation of Vorticism
This group was founded by artists, writers and polemics, Wyndham Lewis in 1914. One of their group exhibitions was held in London the following year. Vorticism was launched with problems (of two) magazine explosions that contain among other material two aggressive manifesto by Lewis’ Blasting ‘what he considers as a British arts and culture and proclaimed Vortic aesthetics:’ The New Vortex tamed into the heart of the present – us produce new life abstractions’.
Vorticist paintings combine cubist fragmentation from reality with a hard image originating from the engine and urban environment. Basically, it is a British who is equivalent to futurism, although with doctrinal differences, and Lewis is very hostile to the futurists. Other artists involved with the group were Lawrence Atkinson, Jessica Dismorr, Cuthbert Hamilton, William Roberts, Helen Saunders, Edward Wadsworth, and Sir Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. David Bomberg does not officially become a group member but produces great work in the same style.
The first world war ended vorticism, although in 1920 Lewis made a brief effort to revive him with Group X. The horror of war brought a rejection of avant-garde that supported the manufacture of traditional arts, known as returns to order.
