Explanation of Unit One
At this point two mainstreams in modern art are seen as abstract arts on the one hand and surrealism on the other. Unit one adheres to a full spectrum, Nash itself made abstract and surreal works in the mid -1930s and played a major role in organizing international surrealis exhibitions in London in 1936 (British surrealism). The launch of the group was announced in a letter from the newspaper Paul Nash to the Times, where he wrote that the one unit was ‘to defend the expression of a true spirit -truly contemporary, for things recognized as special today in painting, sculpture and architecture’.
The first and one -group exhibition was held in 1934 accompanied by unit one unit, with the title Modern Movement in English Architecture, Painting and Statue. It consists of statements by all artists in groups, photos of their work, and introduction by critics and poet Herbert Read, who is an important champion of modernism in the UK. Other artists involved are John Armstrong, John Bigge, Edward Burra, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Edward Wadsworth and Architect Welles Coates and Colin Lucas.
