Explanation of The Clique
This group has no special goals other than to improve their work, even though they prefer literary and historical subjects. The weekly meeting was held where the subject was chosen and each made a monochrome sketch. The criticism session was followed and the best sketch of the night chosen.
The artists in Click are Richard Dadd, Augustus Egg, Alfred Elmore, William Frith, Henry O’Neill and John Phillip. In 1841 Dadd, Frith and Egg were also involved in efforts to establish an exhibition community for young artists who were contrary to the academy. They were nicknamed ‘The Malcontents’ by painter William Bell Scott and no one came from the scheme.
In 1843 Dadd killed his father and was jailed in the Bethlem hospital because of crazy, and then broadmoor, for the rest of his life. He continued to paint, producing some of the most extraordinary imaginative works in British art, including Peri Key paintings, Fairy Fairy Fairy Master-Stroke Fairy.
