Understanding Subjective Photography
So, what is actually meant by Subjective Photography?
Subjective photography is an international movement established in Germany by photographer Otto Steinert in 1951 who fought for photography that explored the souls in and human conditions rather than reflect the outside world.
Explanation of Subjective Photography
This movement evolved from the groupform group that was started by Steinart and Peter Keetman in the late 1940s. The group held three exhibitions entitled Subjective Photographies in 1951, 1954 and 1958, and Steinart published a manifesto in which he wrote that subjective photography ‘means photography that was humanized and individual’. This is partly an effort to keep subjective photographers from the rise of commercial photography, documentary and journalism. This group maintains many experimental techniques used in Bauhaus before the Second World War, but their subject matter is more complex, reflecting aspects that are darker than their human conditions through their expressionist and hallucinations. This movement is international, and includes photographers from Germany, Japan, Sweden, America and São Paulo.
Photographers associated with subjective photography are Harry Callahan, Thomaz Farkas, Gaspar Gasparian, Marcel Giró, Peter Keetman, Takashi Kijima, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Kiyoshi Niiyama, Toni Schneiders, Aaron Siskind, Otto Steinert, Christer Strömholm, Ludwig Windstosser.
