Still Life is all types of man -made or natural objects, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, games, grapes, and so on. Still alive can be a celebration of material pleasure such as food and wine, or often a warning about annoyance about this pleasure and the short life of human life (see Mori’s memories).

In the genre hierarchy (or type of subject) for art founded in the seventeenth century by the French academy, still alive in the lower ranking – fifth after historical paintings, portraits, genre paintings (daily life scenes) and landscapes. Silent life and landscape are considered low because they do not involve human subject matter.

In modern art, simple life arrangements are often used as a relatively neutral basis for formal experiments, for example by Paul Cézanne, a cube painter and, then in the twentieth century, by Patrick Caulfield.
