So, what is actually meant by Salon?
Initially the name of the official art exhibition organized by the France Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture (Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture) and his successor The Academy of Fine Arts (Académie des Beaux Arts))).
Explanation of Salon
From 1725 the exhibition was held in a room called Salon Carré in Louvre and was known only as a salon. This then led to the term generic French ‘salon’ for large mixed arts exhibitions. In the middle of the nineteenth century the academy had become very conservative, and with their great exhibition monopoly against the wave of innovation that increased in their naturalism, realism, impressionism and successors.
Around 1860 the number of artists issued from the official salon became so large and the scandal in such a way that in 1863 the government was forced to form an alternative, to accommodate the rejected artists. This is known as Salon Des Refusés. Three further salons des refuse were held in 1874, 1875 and 1886.
In 1884, Salon Des Indépendents was founded by Neo-Impressionists, Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, along with Odilon Redon, as an alternative exhibition for innovative or anti-academic arts. This held an annual exhibition until the beginning of the first world war.
In 1903, Salon D’Latomne was established, as well as an alternative exhibition for innovation artists. It was there that Fauvism became a public concern in 1905. Salon D’nitute continued to be held in Paris every year.
Since then in the salon has become a generic French term for a large mixed exhibition.
