Understanding Purism
So, what is actually meant by Purism?
Purism is a movement formed around 1918 which proposes a kind of painting in which the object is represented as a strong basic form that is stripped of detail.
Explanation of Purism
This movement was founded by Edouard Jeanneret (better known as the modern architect Le Corbusier) and Amédée Ozenfant. They set the theory of purism in their book Après Le Cubism (after cubism) published in 1918. They criticized the fragmentation of objects in the cubism and the way in which the cubism became, in their view, decorative at that time. Instead they propose a kind of painting in which objects are represented as a strong basic form that is stripped by details. Fernand Léger is another key artist associated with purism.
An important element of purism is the arms of technology and machinery and aims to provide mechanical subject matter and classic quality industry. References for ancient Greek architecture can be seen in attack (like the Greek column) in bottles in the composition of the Still Life Ozenfant.
Purism reached a climax at Pavillon de L’Prit Nouveau (new spirit pavilion), built in 1925 for decorative art exposition and international industry in Paris. This is hung by work by three school principals and also includes cabbage, Juan Gris and Jacques Lipchitz. After this the key relationship between Ozenfant and Le Corbusier broke up.
