Understanding Pop Art
So, what is actually meant by Pop Art?
Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and developed in the 1960s in America and Britain, attracting inspiration from sources in popular and commercial cultures. Different cultures and countries contributed to the movements during the 1960s and 70s.
Explanation of Pop Art
Emerged in the mid -1950s in the UK and the late 1950s in America, Pop art reached its peak in the 1960s. This began as a rebellion of the dominant approach to art and culture and traditional views about what should be art. Young artists feel that what is taught in art schools and what they see in the museum has nothing to do with their lives or things they see around them every day. Instead they turn to sources such as Hollywood films, advertisements, product packaging, pop music and comic books for their image.
In 1957, pop artist Richard Hamilton registered ‘Characteristics of Pop Art’ in a letter to his friends, Architect Peter and Alison Smithson:
Pop Art Is: Popular (designed for mass audience), transient (short -term solution), can be spent (easily forgotten), low -cost, mass produced, young (intended for youth), witty, sexy, attracting attention, glamor, business big
Modernist critics are horrified with the use of ” low ‘pop’ pop artists and by their treatment that seems not critical of it. In fact, both of them bring art to new fields in the subject matter and develop new ways to present them in art and can be seen as one of the first manifestations of postmodernism.
American pop vs. English pop
Although they are inspired by the same subject matter, English pop is often seen as different from American pop.
Early pop art in England was triggered by popular American culture seen from a distance, while American artists were inspired by what they saw and experienced in that culture.
In the United States, the pop style is the return of the art of representational (art that describes the visual world in a recognized way) and the use of hard edges and different forms after the pain of the painter from abstract expressionism. By using worldly worldly images, pop artists also want to stay away from the emphasis on personal feelings and personal symbolism which features abstract expressionism.
In England, the movement was more academic in its approach. When using irony and parody, it is more focused on what is represented by the popular American image, and its strength in manipulating people’s lifestyles. The 1950s arts group The Independent Group (IG), is considered a predecessor of the English Pop Art Movement.
