In some cases they seem to have been mixed into pasta first. The paintings are mostly representing animals but there are some human images.
Since then painting has changed very little. Support evolved from the face of the stone, through the walls of the building, became portable paper, wood, and finally cloth, especially canvas. Various pigments are expanded through various earth and minerals, to plant modern synthetic extracts and colors. The pigment has been mixed with water and gum to make paint, but in the fifteenth century in Europe innovation using oil (flax seeds) produced new and durable media that played a major role in the explosion of creativity in Western paintings in The Renaissance and afterwards. At the same time the subject matter was expanded to embrace almost every aspect of life (genre).
