In 1964 French artist Jean Dubuffet began to collect works of art that he considered free from social constraints. This is called Art Brut (RAW Art) – Another term for outsiders – and in 1948 he founded Compagnie de L’Art Brut with André Breton.
Artist Ben Nicholson discovered the Naive Alfred Wallis painter in ST Ives in the 1920s. A retired fisherman, Wallis painted a picture of a ship and a city port on a burstist wood and cardboard.
