Mono-ha (School of Things) is a pioneering art movement that appeared in Tokyo in the mid-1960s whose artist, instead of making traditional representational artwork, materials that were explored and their characteristics as a reaction to what they saw as development and cruel industrialization in Japan.
Explanation of Mono-Ha
The movement, led by artists Lee Ufan and Nobuo Sekine, is one of a number of groups involved in ‘not making’. Founder Lee Member observed that an artist’s ability to make something had been canceled by technology. As a result, he rejects traditional ideas that support the world to express the world as well as being involved with materials and exploring its characteristics. In 1968 the Sekine featured a 2.7 meter high land tower next to the identical hole in the ground as an illustration of this concept.
Other artists associated with the Mono-Ha movement including Susumu Koshimizu, Kishio Suga and Noriyuki Haraguchi.
The name Mono-Ha was created a little insulted by a journalist in responding to the lack of Poland and the lack of skills displayed in making work. When this movement gained international recognition, and through its relationship with Arte Povera, Mono-ha became widely respected as a movement that was critically involved.
