Understanding Minimalism
So, what is actually meant by Minimalism?
Minimalism is an extreme form of abstract art developed in the US in the 1960s and marked by works of art consisting of simple geometric forms based on squares and rectangles.
Explanation of Minimalism
Minimalist and initial abstraction
Although radical, and rejects a lot of concerns from the previous expressionist abstract movement, the previous abstract movement was an important influence on minimalist ideas and techniques. In 1962, the first English book about Avant-Garde Russia, Camilla Great’s Great Experiment in Art: 1863-1922, was published. With this publication, concerns from the Russian and Suprematic Constructivist movements in the 1910s and 1920s, such as reducing artwork to their important structures and the use of factory production techniques, became more widely understood -and clearly inspired minimalist sculptors. And Flavin produced a series of works entitled Respects to Vladimir Tatlin (Starting in 1964); Robert Morris alluded to Tatlin and Rodchenko in his notes about the statue; And Donald Judd’s essay about Kazzimir Malevich and his contemporary people, expressed his interest in this Avant-Garde heritage.
