Understanding Merz
So, what is actually meant by Merz?
Merz is the word bullshit created by German chest artists Kurt Schwitters to describe the work of collage and its collection based on the memo material that is processed.
Explanation of Merz
Kurt Schwitters make a large number of small collages and more substantial collections in this media. He is said to have extracted the word Merz from the name of the commerz bank that appeared on a piece of paper in one of the collages.
Schwitters founded the chest group in Hanover where he was based in 1919. There he created his first Merzbau (Merz Building). This is his own home, which he filled with around forty ‘caves’ – really construction – really attached to the interior cloth of the building and even extended through the window.
In 1937 after his work was included in the decline, he fled from Germany to Norway. There he created the second Merzbau. In 1940 he discovered protection in the UK where he began the third Merzbau in Ambleside in the Lake District. The first Merzbau was destroyed in the second world war, the second with fire in 1951 and the third was left unfinished at the time of his death in 1947. Now maintained in the Hatton Gallery of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
