When, also in the seventeenth century, the French academy classified the art genre, he placed the fourth landscape in the important order of five genres. However, landscape paintings became increasingly popular during the eighteenth century, although the classical idea dominated.
However, the 19th century, seeing an explosion of extraordinary naturalistic landscape paintings, some are encouraged because of the idea that nature is a direct manifestation of God, and in part by increasing the alienation of many people from nature by growing industrialization and urbanization. Britain produced two extraordinary contributors for this phenomenon at John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. The stick was then forwarded to France where, in the hands of impressions, landscape paintings became a vehicle for a revolution in Western paintings (modern art) and traditional hierarchy of the genre collapsed.
In the second half of the twentieth century, the definition of landscape was challenged. The genre is expanded to include urban and industrial landscapes, and artists began to use less traditional media in the creation of landscape works. For example in the 1960s land artists such as Richard Long radically changed the relationship between landscapes and art by creating works of art directly in the landscape.
