Land Art is part of a broader conceptual art movement in the 1960s and 1970s. The most famous land artwork is Jetty Spiral Robert Smithson in 1970, a landwork built to Great Salt Lake in the US. Although some artists such as Smithson use equipment that moves mechanical earth to make their artwork, other artists make minimal and temporary interventions in landscapes like Richard Long who only walk up and down until he makes a sign on earth.

Land Art, also known as Art Earth, is usually documented in artwork using photos and maps that can be exhibited by artists in the gallery. Land artists also make land art in the gallery by carrying material from landscapes and using it to make installations.
