Intaglio, in visual art, one of the four main classes of graphic art techniques, is distinguished from three other methods (printing of assistance, stencils, and lithography) by the fact that the ink that forms the design is only printed from a hidden area. Among the intaglio techniques are engraving, etching, drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint (QQ.V.).

Intaglio printing is the opposite of a relief printing, because printing is done from ink under the surface of the plate. The design is cut, scratched, or engraved into the surface or printing plate, which can be copper, zinc, aluminum, magnesium, plastic, or even coated paper. Printing ink is rubbed into the incision or groove, and the surface is cleaned.

Unlike surface printing, the printing of intaglio – which is actually a process of spending paper into the lines that are given – put a large enough pressure. The intaglio process may be the most flexible graphic artistic method, because various techniques can produce various effects.

Almost all intaglio plates are printed in the same way, using a roller press. This basically consists of two bearing rollers with movements that can be moved horizontally between them. Thick ink is forced to enter the incision of the Intaglio plate with a roller, and the excess ink is deleted.

The ink plate is placed facing up on the bed, a piece of wet printing paper is placed on it, and the blanket (to ensure even pressure) wrapped in both. Then the roller over the press is rotated and the bed is pulled through; The pressure of several tons that are transmitted through the blanket presses the wet paper into the gaps of plates filled with ink, resulting in printed images.

There are two ways to make intaglio molds in various colors. In the method known as à la poupée (France: “with dolls”), a bunch of doll -shaped fabrics is used to apply different colors to different areas from one plate, which is then printed in the usual way.

In another separate plate method, each carrying a different color, respectively in excessive printed on a piece of paper. When this multi-look method is used, the printer must be careful to ensure that each successive color falls in the right location. The most appropriate method to ensure color registration involves the use of small holes to check alignment.
