Installation of artwork (also sometimes described as a ‘environment’) often occupies the entire room or gallery space that must be passed by the audience to be fully involved with the work of art. However, some installations are designed only to walk and ponder, or very fragile so that it can only be seen from the door, or one end of the room. What makes the installation art different from the statue or other traditional art forms is that it is a complete integrated experience, rather than the appearance of separate individual art. Focus on how viewers experience work and the desire to provide intense experience for them is the dominant theme in installation art. As said by Ilya Kabakov artist:

The main actor in the total installation, the main center handled, all of which are intended, are the audience.

Installation art emerged from an environment made by artists such as Allan Kaprow, which was made from 1957, although there was an important precursor, such as Merzbau 1933 Kurt Schwitters, an environment from several rooms made at the home of artists in Hanover. In an unpredited interview published in 1965 Allan Kaprow said about its first environment:

I just simply filled the whole gallery up … when you open the door you found yourself in the midst of an entire environment … The materials were were Varied: Sheets of Plastic, Crumpled Up Cellophane, Tangles of Scotch Tape, Sects of Slassed and Daubed Enamel and Pieces of colored cloth … five tape machines scattered around the room playing electronic sounds that I have made.

From the 1960s, the creation of installations has become the main strand in modern art. This happened in the early 1990s when the ‘accident’ of the art market in the late 1980s caused the resurrection of interest in conceptual arts (art that focused on ideas rather than objects). Other ingredients -other (mixed media), light and sound remain fundamental for installation art.

Moreover, as we have seen above, this term is one of a collection of dictionaries, acronyms, terms, jargon, or terminology in the field of arts that begins with an alphabet or prefix I, as well as terms associated with I.
