Understanding Impressionism
So, what is actually meant by Impressionism?
Impressionism was developed in France in the 19th century and was based on the practice of painting out of the door and spontaneously ‘in the place’ rather than in the studio of the sketch. The main impressionist subject is the scenery and scenes of daily life.
Explanation of Impressionism
Impressionism was developed by Claude Monet and other artists based in Paris from the early 1860s. (Although the process of paintings in place can be said to have been spearheaded in England by John Constable around 1813-17 through his desire to paint nature in a realistic way).
Instead of painting in the studio, impressions found that they could capture the effects of momentary and temporarily from the sun by working quickly, in front of their subjects, in the open air (en plein air) rather than in the studio. This produces greater awareness about light and color and natural scenery ordering patterns. Brushwork becomes fast and broken down to be applied separately to make the quality of light passing quickly.
The first group exhibition was in Paris in 1874 and included the work of Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Detas and Paul Cezanne. The work displayed was welcomed with ridicule with the impression of monet, the sunrise was especially chosen to be ridiculed and gave his name (used by critics as an insult) of the movement. Seven further exhibitions were then held at intervals until 1886.
Other core artists of impressionism are Camille Pissarro and Berthe Morisot with Edgar Dheas and Edouard Manet are also often associated with this movement.
Although originating from France, impressionism has a big influence abroad. The core of British impressionist includes Walter Richard Sickert and Wilson Steer.
