Introduction to Hackney Flashters

The group name is a fun word game on the camera flash, their choice media. They use documentary photography as a tool in their activism.

Their work is focused on Hackney, East London, one of the poorest areas in London.

Who are they?

Most groups are photographers, but they include cartoonists, graphic designers, writers and editors.

Their output is credited to collectives rather than the individuals mentioned but the core groups include Dekker, Sally Greenhill, Gerda Jager, Liz Heron, Michael Ann Mullen, Maggie Murray, Christine Roche, Jo Spence and Julia Vellacott. This group also collaborated with Helen Grace, Maggie Millman, Jini Rawlings, Ruth Barrenbaum, Annette Soloman, Arlene Strasberg and Chris Treweek.

Exhibition

This collective produced two exhibitions that toured for several years: Women and Work, 1975 and who was holding a baby?, 1978.

Women and Jobs 1975

In 1975 the Hackney Trade Council invited Hackney Flashters to produce female photo exhibitions working in the region as part of their 75th anniversary celebration.

Exhibitions, women and works, consisting of nearly two hundred photography prints and accompanying texts. This exhibition documents the distinctive role taken by women who are often uncomfortable and low salary. These photos document women who protest in domestic violence, families who campaign for the provision of nurseries and women and siblings who provide care to small children.

Who is holding the baby? 1978

During the preparation of women and work it is clear that the role of women is underestimated at work and at home. This is combined with the hope that they are responsible for raising children. In who is carrying the baby?, Hackney Flashs criticizes the lack of provision of childcare and its impact on women’s lives.

This exhibition is looking for solutions, proposing joint care with male partners and presents positive examples of child care in market nurseries, community nurseries in Hackney.

The works adopted by Montage, combining documentary photography, appropriate images, text, cartoon and graffiti illustrations.
