Understanding Gutai
So, what is actually meant by Gutai?
Gutai is a Japanese avant-garde group that was formed in 1954 whose ideas are radical and their approach makes the arts anticipated performance and conceptual arts in the 1960s and 1970s.
Explanation of Gutai
Gutai Bijutsu Kyokai (Gutai Art Association) was formed in 1954 in Osaka by Yoshihara Jiro, Kanayama Akira, Murakami Saburo, Shiraga Kazuo and Shozo Shimamoto. The word has been translated into English as a ’embodiment’ or ‘concrete’. Yoshihara is an older artist around the united and who financed group. The art historian YVVE-ATHER Bois said that ‘Gutai Group’s activities in the mid-1950s were one of the most important moments of Japanese culture after the port’.
In their early public exhibitions in 1955 and 1956, Gutai artists created a series of striking works to anticipate events and performance and conceptual arts in the future. Shiraga’s challenge for the 1955 mud, where the artist rolled half naked in a pile of mud, remained the most famous event related to the group. Also in 1955 Murakami created a laceration of paper which was reportedly amazing, where he ran through the paper screen. In the second Gutai show in 1956, Shiraga used his feet to paint a large canvas lying on the floor. From around 1950 Shimamoto had made a painting from the newspaper layer attached together, painted and then stabbed with a hole, anticipating the work that was stabbed by Lucio Fontana. In 1954 Murakami Saburo made a series of paintings by throwing balls soaked in ink on paper. In 1956 Shimamoto continued to make a work called a color throw by destroying glass stoples filled with pigments to canvas placed on the floor.
The Ashiya Arts and History Museum in Japan holds a large collection of Gutai works and archives. This group was dissolved in 1972 after Yoshihara’s death. There was a retrospective exhibition of their work at Jeu De Pauume in Paris in 1999.
