Understanding Graphite
So, what is actually meant by Graphite?
Graphite is the most metal gray -gray writing material and the most commonly used image material in the form of a pencil – although graphite powder is also used by artists as image material.
Explanation of Graphite
Graphite is a form of carbon crystal and is useful as a writing tool and image, because only the slightest pressure is needed to leave a sign. It has an oily texture and dull metal gray. Graphite is a stable and permanent material but can be easily removed using an eraser.
Soft and brittle graphite so that, unless used as a picture material in powder form, it requires several forms of protective casing. The exact date and origin of the first graphite pencil are unknown but it is estimated that the first graphite stick wrapped in wood appeared around 1565, shortly after the discovery of natural graphite in Cumberland in England. Graphite also occurs naturally in Siberia, Bavariain Germany, and in the United States. However, it can be made artificially by heating coke at high temperatures, known as the asheson process.
At present graphite is usually referred to as a ‘pencil’ or sometimes ‘lead pencil’. This name arises because before the discovery of graphite, tin has been used since ancient times as a writing tool. Graphite is considered a lead form to 1779, when K.W. Scheele, a Swedish chemist, found that the so -called lead used in a pencil, is actually a form of carbon mineral. That is called ‘Graphite’ of the Greek word to write. The term pencil comes from the Latin word for a brush, ‘penisilum’.
