Understanding Gestural
So, what is actually meant by Gestural?
Gestural is a term used to describe the application of paint in free sweeping movements with a brush.
Explanation of Gestural
The term initially began to be used to describe the painting of abstract expressionist artists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hofmann and others (also referred to as action painters). In the case of pollock, brush may dry, or stick, dipped in the paint and left on the canvas. He also poured directly from the can. The idea is that the artist will physically portray his inner impulses, and that something from emotions or the state of his mind will be read by viewers in the resulting paint sign. De Kooning wrote: “I paint this way because I can continue to put more things into it – drama, anger, pain, love – through your eyes again it becomes emotional or ideas.”
This painting approach has origin in expressionism and automaticism (especially Joan Miró’s paintings). In its history in 1970, abstract expressionism, Irvine Sandler distinguishes two branches of movement, ‘painter movement’ and painter ‘color field’.
The term gestural has been applied to whatever paintings are done in this way.
