Understanding Futurism
So, what is actually meant by Futurism?
Futurism is an Italian art movement at the beginning of the twentieth century aimed at capturing in the art of dynamism and the energy of the modern world.
Explanation of Futurism
Futurism was launched by Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909. On February 20 he published Manifesto Futurism on the front page of the Paris Le Figaro newspaper.
Among the modernist movements, futurism is very hard in its rejection in the past. This is because in Italy, the weight of past culture feels very oppressive. In manifesto, Marinetti asserted that ‘we will free Italy from the countless museums that cover it like an county grave’. Conversely, what is proposed by futurists is the art that celebrates the industrial world and modern technology:
We declare … new beauty, speed of speed. Motorbike Racing … More beautiful than Samothrace’s victory. (Ancient Greek statue in the Louvre Museum in Paris.)
Futurist paintings use neo-impressionism and cubism elements to create compositions that express ideas of dynamism, energy and movements, modern life.
The head of artists associated with futurism is Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccii, Gino Severini.
Vortisism is basically the British who is equivalent to futurism, but Wyndham Lewis, the founder of vorticists is very hostile to the futurists.
After the brutality of the first world war, many artists rejected the idea of Avant-Garde about futurism and other pre-war movements, using a more traditional and convincing approach, a phenomenon described as ‘Return to Order’.
