Understanding Frottage
So, what is actually meant by Frottage?
Frottage is a surrealist and ‘automatic’ method of creative production that involves the manufacture of textured surfaces using pencils or other image materials.
Explanation of Frottage
This technique was developed by Max Ernst in an image made from 1925. Frottage is the word French for rubbing. Ernst was inspired by ancient wooden floors where the board grains have been emphasized by the scrubbing for years. The grain pattern suggested a strange picture to him. From 1925 he caught this by putting a sheet of paper on the floor and then rubbing it with a soft pencil. The results showed a mysterious forest inhabited by creatures such as birds and Ernst published this collection of images in 1926 titled Histoire Naturelle (Nature History).
He then used a variety of textured surfaces and quickly adapted oil painting techniques, calling it grattage. In grattage, the canvas is prepared with a layer or more of the paint and then placed on a textured object which is then eroded. In the forest of Ernst and reaching trees -the trees seemed to have been created by rubbing the backbone of the fish.
