Understanding Etching
So, what is actually meant by Etching?
ETSA is a graphic art technique that uses chemical actions to produce lines that are initiated in a metal printing plate which then holds the ink applied and forms images.
Explanation of Etching
Plate, traditionally copper but now usually zinc, prepared with acid resistant soil. The line is pulled through the soil, showing metal. The plates are then soaked in acids and open metals are ‘bitten’, producing the lines that are initiated. Stronger acids and longer exposure produce deeper lines. Hold is removed and ink is applied to a concave line, but is removed from the surface. The plate is then placed on paper and passing a printing machine with a large pressure to transfer ink from a hidden path. Sometimes ink can be left on the surface of the plate to provide a background tone.
Etsa is used to decorate metals from the fourteenth century, but may not be used to make graphics long before the early sixteenth century. Since then many ETSA techniques have been developed, which are often used at the same time: Ethsa-ground-ground using non-uncomfortable resistant or ground, to produce softer lines; Bite saliva involves painting or sprinkling acid into a plate; Open bite where the plate area is exposed to acid without resist; Photographs (also called photogravure or helograve) are produced by coating print plates with sensitive acid resistal soil and then exposing this to light to reproduce photography images. The results of biting rot from accidental or accidental acid erosion.
Like carvings, Etsa is an intaglio technique. Intaglio refers to all printing techniques and graphic arts that involve making indentation or incision into a plate or print surface that holds ink when ink is applied to the surface and then cleaned.
