Understanding Der Blaue Reiter
So, what is actually meant by Der Blaue Reiter?
Der Blaug Reiter was a German expressionist group from Munich in 1909.
Explanation of Der Blaue Reiter
Der Blaug Reiter is translated into English as a blue rider. A number of Avant-Garde artists living in Munich have established Neue Kunstler Veriningung, or the New Artist Association (N.K.V.). Most important of this is Kandinsky who was born in Russia and Germany, Franz Marc. In 1911 Kandinsky and Marc broke the relationship with N.K.V. And in December that year was held at the Munich of Der Blaug Reiter’s first exhibition. This is an informal association rather than a coherent group like Brücke. Other artists who were closely involved were Paul Klee, August Macke, Gabriele Münter and Marianne von Wasfkin.
In 1912 Marc and Kandinsky published a collection of essays about art with wooden covers by Kandinsky. This is the repetition of Almanach der Blauge. Why the name was chosen not entirely clear. Franz Marc worshiped horses and many of his paintings about them and other animals were symptoms to return to nature (aspects of primitivism) of many early modern artists. Kandinsky was always fascinated by the driver by riding a horse (a horse is a symbol of strength, freedom and pleasure). Kandinsky’s paintings in 1903 were actually called Blue Rider. Blue is a color that often looks important for artists and for Kandinsky and Marc, whose favorite colors, seem to have a mystical meaning.
Der Blaug Reiter was presented by the first world war where both Macke and Marc were killed.
