Crypt group is a group of fragments from the Styve Society of Artists which consists of artists who work in modern abstract styles that are very different from the traditional approach adopted by the majority of its members.
Explanation of Crypt Group
From the foundation in 1927 the artist community of ST Ives was the dominant exhibition community of ST Ives. In 1939 Dame Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo moved to ST Ives to form the core of what became a strong modern group in the colony. From around 1943, the ST Ives community tried to integrate modern artists into their exhibitions, but in practice their work tends to be hung in places that are the most prominent in the previous church used for exhibitions.
In 1947 modern artists began to hold a separate exhibition, especially in the basement of the church itself. They are known as the Crypt group. There were two shows in 1947 and the third in 1948. The division between Modern ST artists and more traditional confirmed later in 1947, when Sir Alfred Munnings who was famous for being chosen as president of society. However, also in 1948, members of the Crypt group became a member of the founder of the Penim Society of Artists. This finally determines a separate identity for modern artists in ST Ives and The Crypt Group has no further reasons for.
