Understanding Conceptual Photography
So, what is actually meant by Conceptual Photography?
Conceptual photography is photography that describes an idea.
Explanation of Conceptual Photography
Since the discovery of photography cameras, artists have explored it as a means to hold the wrong reality, or capture ideas. This can be seen in one of the photos that were staged first, Hippolyte’s self -portrait of Paying about a drowned man, 1840.
However, the term ‘conceptual photography’ began to be used in the 1960s, to coincide with the initial exploration into video art and conceptual arts. This phrase can refer to the use of any photography in the conceptual art movement.
Conceptual photography development
Using cameras, artists such as Richard Long and Dennis Oppenheim began to record their performances and temporary works of art in a way that is now often described as flat. The aim is to make simple and realistic images of artwork that appears as a documentary possible.
The artist adopted this approach as far as the twentieth century when Alfred Stieglitz photographed Marcel Duchamp’s readymade made of urinal, fountain, for an exhibition in New York. The original fountain is lost, but the photos by STIEGLITZ are permanent and have become a work of art in themselves.
Others explore conceptual photography as a means to hold ideas. This is often seen in advertising, where images are used to convey clear concepts, often using actors or props.
Conceptual photography has been expanded to include artists such as Cindy Sherman, John Hilliard and Broomberg and Chanarin. For them the media is far more experimental, taking documentation or performance elements but interpreting them back in a new way.
Various photography included in this title is very diverse with the availability of photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. This allows anyone with a computer to create images that are not yet representated directly from what is in front of the lens.
Likewise, platforms such as Instagram and Flikr have allowed smartphone users to share their photography and create all job portfolios. Amalia Ulman is an example of one of these photographers; Using Instagram to make all narratives around fictional identity.
