This term was first used by Robert Farris Thompson in his book in 1983 Flash of the Spirit: Africa and Afro-American and Philosophy and became the subject of The Black Atlantic by Paul Gilroy: Modernity and Multiple Awareness, which was published in 1993. Gilroy argued that The World of Atlantic has been formed in depth by slavery and slave trade. Between 1492 and 1820 about two-thirds of people who cross the Atlantic to America are Africans, and this brutal migration plays an important role in developing black consciousness in America and Europe. But Gilroy argues that this black consciousness is ambivalent: it not only rejects white culture, but is actively involved with it. Basically he found a way to re -cross the Atlantic creatively and, as a result, has a central role in the formation of modernism.
Although developed by referring to modernism, the process of apropriation and a combination of cultural produced discussed by Gilroy in his theory of black Atlantic can also be seen in the work of contemporary black artists such as Chris Offili, Ellen Gallagher and Glenn Ligon. They explore and re -define the ideas of darkness by tasting and recycling various sources including black vernacular and popular cultural language and black history, as well as the modernism of black and eurocentrics – realizing what is called Gilroy ‘polyphonic quality of the expression of black culture’. Unlike their predecessors, their work often has an ambivalent or satirical taste by frequently using negative and racist images, black humor, slang and laughter to damage racism but also to re -examine the attitudes and aspirations of black and black political history.
