Understanding Automatism
So, what is actually meant by Automatism?
In art, automaticme refers to creating art without conscious thinking, accessing material from unconscious thoughts as part of the creative process.
Explanation of Automatism
Automatically as a term borrowed from physiology, where it describes body movements that are not consciously controlled like breathing or walking through. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalyst uses free associations and drawing or writing automatically to explore unconscious thoughts from their patients.
The idea of Freud greatly influenced French poet André Breton who launched the surrealist movement in 1924 with the publication of manifesto surrealism. In manifesto, Breton defines surrealism as
‘Automatically Pure Psychic … Dictation of thought without all the controls carried out for reasons and beyond all moral or aesthetic problems’.
Breton and others produce the earliest examples of automatically in their automatic writing, which aims to write as quickly as possible without consciously intervening to guide the hand.
Surrealist collage, composing images that are cut off from magazines, product catalogs, book illustrations and other sources, discovered by Max Ernst, and is the first form of automaticism in visual art. Ernst also uses frottage (rubbing) and grattage (scraping) to make the texture of opportunities in his work. Various forms of images and paintings are automatically developed by artists such as Joan Miro, Andre Masson and Ernst.
Automatically then plays several parts in Jackson Pollock’s abstract expressionism and others and is an important element in the European Movement for Arte Nucleare.
While the term automaticme is specifically associated with the twentieth century artists, and especially surrealism, previous artists such as Alexander Cozens used several elements of opportunities to make works, while others were reported to use visionary or trance countries.
