Authenticity is a term used by philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin to describe the quality of original artwork that is contrary to reproduction.

Benjamin first used the word in his essay work of art in the era of mechanical reproduction, where he described the original work of art as ‘authenticity’. That is, he has the presence of space and time, and unique existence in the place that occurs.

Authenticity can also be related to counterfeiting, to determine whether a work of art is truly created by artists related to it.
