Understanding Authenticity
So, what is actually meant by Authenticity?
Authenticity is a term used by philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin to describe the quality of original artwork that is contrary to reproduction.
Explanation of Authenticity
Benjamin first used the word in his essay work of art in the era of mechanical reproduction, where he described the original work of art as ‘authenticity’. That is, he has the presence of space and time, and unique existence in the place that occurs.
Reproduction of art does not have a ‘authenticity’ because it is impossible, when reproducing art, to determine the right conditions in which original artwork is made. But it is possible, by reproducing a work of art, to question the authenticity of original artwork, because reproducing it has damaged the work of art.
For this reason, original artwork is considered by the art market to have a higher value than reproduction because it contains this authenticity.
Authenticity can also be related to counterfeiting, to determine whether a work of art is truly created by artists related to it.
