Explanation of Artist Placement Group
APG, which was founded by Barbara Steveni and her husband John Latham, arose from the idea that artists are human resources that are not utilized by the community. Artists are isolated from the public by the gallery system, and in the Ghetto world of art is protected from the worldly reality of industry and government trade. The idea is that artists, appointed by the incidental people by Latham, will bring the entirely alternative ways to see and think to bear the organization where they are placed. Thus, APG will recognize the status of the artist’s outside and turn it into a positive social advantage.
In 1966 Steveni and John Latham joined Jeffrey Shaw and Barry Flanagan, immediately followed by David Hall and Ian MacDonald Munro. Among the placement made by APG was one in 1975-6 from Latham itself in the Scottish office in Edinburgh. This produces a radical proposal for the future of a large industrial booty, known as Bing, found in the region. Latham proposed to maintain it as a work of art and mark them with flares.
APG held a large exhibition at Hayward Gallery, London, in 1971. This group continued until 1989 when dissolved as O+I (Organization and Imagination). In 2004 Tate bought the APG archive.
