Understanding Arte Nucleare
So, what is actually meant by Arte Nucleare?
Arte Nucleare is a group of artists founded in Milan in 1951 whose aim is to make art as a response to nuclear times.
Explanation of Arte Nucleare
Nucleare Movimento D’AIN was founded by Italian artists Enrico Baj together with Sergio Dangelo and Gianni Bertini, in Milan in 1951. Gianni Dova was a later member. Their first manifesto was released the following year and another in 1959. The name can be translated as ‘art for nuclear times’, because the group is specifically determined to make art in connection with this. Their manifesto warns the dangers of the wrong application of nuclear technology. They stated the opposition to the geometric abstract art and instead proposed the use of automatic techniques. Thus, they are very in harmony with informelian art.
In the early 1950s, Baj made a painting with the advice of mushroom clouds and destroyed views. In the paintings and collages later, he gave the name ‘thick water’ to the enamel paint and the distilled water emulsion he used. These works include a series of sardonic army officers who are fire! Fire! is one. Some exhibitions were held but the movement subsided around 1960.
