Art Brut is a French term translated as a ‘raw art’, created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe arts such as graffiti or naive arts made outside of academic art traditions.

Jean Dubuffet sees fine arts dominated by academic training, which he calls ‘art culture’ or cultural arts. For dubuffet, art brut – which includes graffiti, and the work of people who are mentally ill, prisoners, children, and primitive artists are raw expressions of vision or emotions, which are not hindered by the convention. He tried to include these quality into his own art, where the term art brut also sometimes applied.
Dubuffet made a large collection of Art Brut, and in 1948 founded Compagnie de L’Art Brut to promote his studies. The collection is now located in a museum, La Collection de L’Art brut in the city of Swiss Lausanne. Another main collection, using the term of outsiders, is a collection of Musgrave Kinley Outsider art, is now loaned to the Modern Irish Museum, Dublin.
