Below is a glossary article post in the category A which discusses the explanation of the meaning, definition and meaning of the acronym, term, jargon, or termonology of Appropriation based on summaries from various types of sources (references) that are relevant, related, and trustworthy.
Understanding Appropriation
So, what is actually meant by Appropriation?
Apropriations in the history of arts and arts refer to the practice of artists using objects or images that have existed before in their art with a little transformation from the original.
Explanation of Appropriation
Apropriation can be traced back to the collage of cube and construction of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque made from 1912, where real objects such as newspapers are included to represent themselves. This practice was developed further in the Readymades created by French artist Marcel Duchamp from 1915. The most famous of them were Fountain, Urinoir Men signed, entitled, and presented on the base. Then, surrealism also utilizes apropriations in collages and objects like Lobster Salvador Dalí. In the late 1950s, appropriate images and objects appeared broadly in the work of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and in the art of pop.
However, this term seems to have been used specifically in relation to certain American artists in the 1980s, especially Sherrie Levine and Neo-Geo group artists, especially Jeff Koons. Sherrie Levine was reproduced as his own work of other works of art, including paintings by Claude Monet and Kasimir Malevich. The aim is to create a new situation, and therefore the meaning or series of new meanings, for familiar pictures.
Apropriation art raises the question of originality, authenticity and gathering, and is included in the long modernist art tradition that questioned the nature or definition of the art itself. Apropriation artists were influenced by the 1934 essay by German philosopher Walter Benjamin, works of art in the reproductive era of mechanical reproduction, and received contemporary support from American critic Rosalind Krauss in his 1985 The Orisinality of the Avant-Garde and other modernists.
Apropriation has been widely used by artists since the 1980s.
Moreover, as we have seen above, this term is one of a collection of dictionaries, acronyms, terms, jargon, or terminology in the field of arts that begins with an alphabet or prefix A, as well as terms associated with A.
