Understanding Abstract Expressionism
So, what is actually meant by Abstract Expressionism?
Abstract Expressionism is a term applied to new forms of abstract art developed by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s. This is often marked by a gestural brush rope or making signs, and the impression of spontaneity.
Explanation of Abstract Expressionism
Abstract expressionist is mostly based in New York City, and is also known as a New York School. The name awakens their goal to make abstract or emotional or emotional art in its effects. They were inspired by the idea of surrealis that art must come from an unconscious mind, and by artist automatically Joan Miró.
Type of abstract expressionism
In abstract expressionism there are two extensive groupings: what is called the action painter, which attacks their canvas with expressive brush strokes; and painters in the color field that fills their canvas with a large area with one color.
The action painter was led by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, who worked spontaneously often using a large brush to make gestural signs. The famous pollock puts his canvas on the ground and dancing around it pouring paint from cans or trailing from a brush or stick. In this way the action painter immediately places the inner impulses into the canvas.
The second grouping includes Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Clyfford. They are very interested in religion and myth and create a simple composition with a broad field of color intended to produce a contemplative response or meditation in viewers. In an essay written in 1948 Barnett Newmann said: ‘instead of making the cathedral out of Christ, humans, or’ life ”, we make it out of ourselves, from our own feelings’. The approach to painting developed from around 1960 to what was later known as a painting of the color field, characterized by artists using a large area with a single flat color.
